The mathematics of good typography

November 2024 · 7 min read · By Philip Ajibade

Type is not decoration. It is a system of relationships — ratios, scales, rhythm — that can be reasoned about precisely.

Great typography is a quantitative art. Type scales are built on ratios, grids on divisions, and rhythm on modular timing.

Using mathematical proportions (like the golden ratio) improves legibility and aesthetic balance.

As you tune typography, you move from subjective preferences to an objective system that can be iterated and tested.

"Design is not just aesthetics—it is the application of logic and empathy, refined by consistent iteration."
